چکیده
Production traits such as growth, feed efficiency, survival, and fillet yield are economically important traits and an improvement in one or more of these traits will benefit the U.S. catfish farming industry. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) 103 line of channel catfish was developed jointly between the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Catfish Genetics Research Unit, Stoneville, Mississippi, and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center (NWAC), Stoneville. The USDA103 line of catfish (also referred to as the NWAC103 line) is being selected for increased growth, fillet yield, and resistance to enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC) and being compared with other genetic groups of catfish having potential commercial use. The USDA103 strain was developed from broodfish obtained in 1992 from the Uvalde National Fish Hatchery, Uvalde, Texas, USA. Many studies have compared growth rates of the USDA103 with other strains of channel catfish and have found that the USDA103 channel catfish exhibit superior growth characteristics (Silverstein et al. 1999; Wolters et al. 2000; Li et al. 2001; Jackson et al. 2003; Bosworth et al. 2004a; Peterson and Small 2006). The faster growth of the USDA103 strain of channel catfish is typically attributed to their ability to consume more feed (Li et al. 2001). The USDA103 strain has been selected for two generations for improved growth, fillet

Differences in Growth and Nutrient Efficiency Between and Within Two Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus Strains
A 6-wk growth study was conducted comparing fingerling (mean weight = 24.7 g) USDA103 strain channel catfish Zctulunrspunctatus to Norris strain channel catfish in an effort to determine strain dmerences in growth and nutrient efficiency. Variability within strains also was assessed by randomly selecting four families from each strain for comparison. On average, USDA103 fish gained significantl...

Ahstracr.-This study evaluated the effects of dietary protein concentration (26, 28, and 32%) on growth. feed efficiency, processing yield, and body composition of USDA 103 and Mississippi “normal” (MN) strains of channel catfish raised in ponds. Fingerling channel catfish (average weight = 32.5 and 47.3 g/fish for USDA103 and MN strains, respectively) were stocked into 24 0.04-ha ponds (12 pon...

—A 9-week growth study was conducted to compare the fingerling performance of two genetic groups of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] 103 and USDA303) with that of blue catfish I. furcatus and their hybrid in an aquarium rack system. Fish of approximately 20 g were randomly selected from multifamily populations and acclimated to the aquarium rack system ...
متن کاملIGF-I and IGF-II mRNA expression in slow and fast growing families of USDA103 channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus).
The objective of this study was to examine insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and IGF-II mRNA levels in fast and slow growing families of catfish. Relative levels of IGF-I and IGF-II mRNA were determined by real-time PCR. Family A exhibited a specific growth rate (SGR) of 3.6 and was designated as fast growing, while family H exhibited a SGR of 3.1 and was designated as slow growing (P=0.017). ...
